Sportshall Athletics was created in 1976 by George Bunner so that youngsters at his local athletics club could continue to train indoors on dark winter nights. Sporty children enjoyed indoor athletics as part of a competition on Tuesday.
Desborough School, in Shoppenhangers Road, hosted the Sportshall Athletics contest for 11 primary schools. More than 160 pupils, aged between nine and 11, took part in athletics specially adapted to be indoors for winter, including running, standing long jump and foam javelin throwing.
Organiser Nick Bielby, Desborough's school sports coordinator, was supported by a team of young leaders from the school who acted as officials and team leaders.
Nick said: "This competition has been a great project for our new sports leadership group at Desborough to get their teeth into. It's always a fun packed afternoon, and as it's a team event every performance counts. All the children love being involved in the competition."
The competition is being held as part of the national School Games initiative, delivered by Ascot & Maidenhead School Sport Partnership (SSP). The children were competing to win a place to represent their SSP at the Berkshire School Games in April. More pupils will take part on Tuesday (Dec 6) when the winner will be decided.
The schools taking part were: Oldfield Primary School, Ellington Primary School, Wessex Primary School, Manor Green School, Larchfield Primary School, Cookham Rise Primary School, St Edmund Campion Catholic Primary School, Holyport CE Primary School, Woodlands Park Primary School, White Waltham CE School, Courthouse Junior School and St Luke's CE Primary School.
